Join award-winning artist blacksmith Alex Sowden of Hammer and Hound Forge — as seen on BBC1’s Make It to Market and Sky Arts’ The Prince’s Master Crafters — for a swashbuckling weekend of live blacksmithing at Bamburgh Castle!
For three days only, Alex and his crew of skilled smiths will be firing up their forge and hammering out a storm of ironwork inspired by the Age of Sail. Expect to see chains, hooks, nails, boathooks, harpoons and more, all forged before your eyes using traditional techniques.
Don’t be surprised to find our blacksmiths fully kitted out in pirate attire, as we’re proud to be part of Bamburgh Castle’s pirate-themed treasure trail! As the forge fires roar and hammers ring out, we’ll be bringing the sights, sounds, and sparks of a working blacksmith’s forge to life — with a bold seafaring twist.
Perfect for all ages, this is your chance to get up close to the ancient craft of blacksmithing in one of the UK’s most iconic coastal castles.

A celebration of fantastic food and drink begins on Friday 15th August at 4pm on The Parade Green in Berwick Upon Tweed. Join us for a feast of amazing street food, brilliant bars with something for everyone and talented musicians to keep you entertained all weekend long. We work tirelessly to ensure there is lots of exciting stalls for you to peruse, plenty of delicious food & drink for you to try plus educational food demos and free children’s activities.
The course consists of a loop of closed roads between the Bamburgh/North Sunderland – slightly undulating with lots of flat sections in the beautiful Northumberland countryside, with some views out to the Farne Islands and Holy Island and the North Sea.
An epic race with a medal and t-shirt when you finish.
