Whether you’re in Lowick, Berwick-upon-Tweed, or one of the many charming villages nearby, there’s a firework display waiting to light up your evening.

But while we enjoy the sparkle and spectacle, it’s important to remember our furry friends who may find the festivities frightening. So, here’s your guide to local fireworks events and pet safety tips to ensure everyone — two-legged and four-legged — has a safe and enjoyable night.

Keeping Pets Safe During Fireworks Season

Fireworks can be distressing for pets, especially dogs, cats, and small animals. Here are expert-backed tips to help keep them calm and safe:

Create a Safe Space

  • Set up a quiet, cosy den with blankets and familiar toys.
  • Close windows and curtains to block out noise and flashes.
  • Play calming music or white noise to mask the sound of fireworks. [atvtoday.co.uk]

Gradual Desensitisation

  • In the weeks leading up to Bonfire Night, play firework sounds at low volume and reward calm behaviour.
  • Slowly increase volume over time to help pets adjust. [atvtoday.co.uk]

Speak to Your Vet

  • If your pet shows severe anxiety, consult your vet about pheromone diffusers, supplements, or medication.
  • Never self-medicate — always follow professional advice. [bva.co.uk]

Identification is Key

  • Ensure your pet is microchipped and wears a collar with up-to-date ID tags.
  • In case they bolt, this helps reunite you quickly. [bva.co.uk]

Small Pets & Livestock

  • Move rabbits, guinea pigs, and poultry indoors or into sheltered areas.
  • Check bonfires before lighting — wildlife may be hiding inside. [bva.co.uk]

Celebrate Responsibly

Bonfire Night is a wonderful tradition that brings communities together. By planning ahead and being mindful of our pets, we can ensure it’s a joyful experience for all.

If you’re attending a local event, wrap up warm, arrive early, and support your local organisers. And if you’re staying in, maybe light a few sparklers in the garden and enjoy the distant glow of fireworks with your pet snuggled beside you.
